Columbus Fall Line Trace

Urban To Rural A Great Path

December, 2025 by moehringaustin24

Great old rail trail. Fully paved. Pitch black at night. There are little to no objects ever in the path. Open from 5am to 11pm. You have to yield to pedestrians. Pass on the left with early audible warning. Plenty of leaves and little twigs in the fall. The winter months doesn't appear to have much upkeep. There's a couple of bridges that are 10 mph max speed. On late Dec. '25, the restrooms across the way at The 14th St Pedestrian Bridge from where the trail ends at The Riverwalk were locked on a Sun. morning. Once you get to 5th Ave. & 14th St -where there's a Circle K, you'll have to wait at a lot of crosswalks all the way to The Riverwalk. You will probably encounter 1 or 2 male bums on 14th St. Also there are what appear to be perminately locked restrooms at the 28th Street crossing near where there is a under-funded and abandoned police bike station. There's always a lot of pesky large pine cones by The Metra Station and Linwood Cemetery. The next restrooms from where the trail starts at The Riverwalk are 4.5 miles away just beyond The Burger King by Columbus State University. Once you enter into the trees past Slade Dr heading northwest there is 1.7 miles of nature and full shade including a nice water crossing bridge before Hilton Ave. After Clubview Dr crossing and past The Hardaway High School Athletic Complex there are some of the tallest trees in the city near a large retention pond with a fountain. Heading NW you then enter a heavy duty bridge that crosses I-185 and it's back into the trees by The CSU athletic complex. You can hear Lindsey Creek waterfalling as it flows out from under the trail by Peachtree Mall and CSU soccer field. After all of that you are just about out of all the commotion and bustle of a urban city. The rest of the trail is quaint but kinda still a little suburban getting more rural as you go.

I love this trail, my imagination runs wild thinking about the history behind it. Very well maintained and freshly paved. I hope they continue to expand it.

Named after the famous train that was also named after the greatest horse of all time. I love the history behind this trail. The trail follows the path of the retired diesel train. Well paved and maintained. Stop by the chamber of Commerce in Hamilton for souvenirs and free refreshments.

Wonderful Greenbelt with plenty miles...we got 29m out of it. One broken up spot, but manageable. Great downtown area restaurants.

Very nice ride. The inclines are a bit long, which makes the downhills a breeze!

Rockdale River Trail

Hilly and Challenging, Well-Maintained

September, 2025 by lauren.blais.7

If you’re up for the challenge of nearly continuous hills, you’ll be rewarded with a lovely ride through nature on this well/signed, well-maintained trail. It’s a great training ride! One suggestion I have for riders doing the Rockdale River Trail is to start at Lorraine Park— where there’s a public bathroom— and bike the three miles to the monastery, then turn back to your car. At that point you can decide if you feel exhausted by the hills or warmed up enough to continue to Panola Mountain State Park, etc. As reviewers said, this trail connects to Arabia Mountain trails, Panola Park trails, and at least part of the South River trail of you wish to extend your ride. Today I turned back at the start of the Arabia Mountain trail, went past the lake to the state park and visited the nature center (which has snacks and drinks for sale during the day), then took the lake loop to get me back on the Rockdale River Trail. The maps on the trail are great and I only got confused once, near the state park where I almost turned toward the Rock Road spur instead. The trail is hilly but mostly shaded, except where it briefly passes through power easements and a few stints along the road. There are two road crossings, one of them with high speed vehicles, so keep that in mind if you have little ones with you. I saw the Rockdale County trail maintenance people and thanked them for their work… the shoulders are clearly regularly mowed and grass/dirt encroachment is almost non existent. The pavement still looks great, even if the paint is fading. All impressive considering the challenging terrain.

Rockdale River Trail

too hilly for me

August, 2025 by rbz28hz9pp

We started at Parker House and took the path to left instead of the one along the river. We were on hybrid bikes and it was too hilly for us - turned around. We drove up to the Monastery which is beautiful . We passed under the covered bridge trail … but did not attempt.

South River Trail

relaxing easy ride

August, 2025 by cpandar

Went out on this trail with my 11-year-old and nine-year-old, who are relatively new to biking any sort of distance. The trail was really nice, scenic, well-maintained, and easy enough for them with some gentle rolling hills. It winds around a golf course for a ways. We ended up doing 6 miles total and it worked well. As of 8/2025, the Atlanta RC club is mat one end is closed, so we had to find an alternate parking spot. Gresham Park is a nice spot to park in.

Ocmulgee Heritage Trail

I started the trail by Camellia garden, rather I attempted to start. The path is not walkable due to construction. It was muddy and not worth the attempt. Very disappointing.
